“To take wine into our mouths is to savor a droplet of human history.” — Clifton Fadiman
Flowing through the middle ages and into modern times, viticulture has become increasingly widespread, complex and as always — influenced by romance and love. Thankfully, at least as far as the written record shows, viticulture is not a contributing economic factor to modern war, and rather, serves as a sanctuary from the horrors of such. Coursing through the 21st Century, it is abundantly clear that viticulture and Venus shall remain eternally linked, ensuring that wherever there is wine, love is not far away.
Part II: First Century A.D. to 1317 A.D.
“Sorrow can be alleviated by good sleep, a bath and a glass of wine.” — Thomas Aquinas
Humanity’s love affair with viticulture is as sweeping and storied as history itself. The magical elixir culled from the fruit of the vine has become an irreplaceable component of religion, medicine and perhaps mankind’s most cherished pastime — the relentless pursuit of romance, for good or ill. Beginning in ancient history and continuing through the ages, wine is a constant companion at the ready through love and loss, war and peace, tragedy and celebration — deepening the subjective experience of the extreme highs and lows life delivers. This timeline includes modern toasting suggestions, allowing readers to sip alongside the losers, poets ans lovers within these stories.
Part One: Ancient History to the End of the First Century B.C.
“Without… wine love would grow cold.” – Roman proverb
From Dionysus and Aphrodite to Mark Antony and Cleopatra, the world of viticulture and the human proclivity for passion are inextricably linked. Sometimes wine acts as a catalyst for the chemistry between lovers, other times the obsession at hand is love for the actual elixir itself. Either way, there is one constant certainty: wine is present with humankind through the ages, flowing alongside the timeline of history like a languid river of romance and mystique. The meandering path of wine saunters through the unfolding eras below, into the present day and splashing, alas, into the very glasses clinked between lovers. Though the wines of these eras are long since quelled, this timeline includes modern suggestions — aptly named for honoring the vintners, toasters and lovers within these stories.
